In the middle of summer, the cool breezes of the Islands open a door to a time far from Istanbul’s hustle. Under the famous plane tree of Büyükada, historic mansions that stand out with their wooden‑lattice windows and mud‑brick construction carry the late Ottoman aesthetic into the present. Walking these streets you encounter not just a building but the lifestyle, sociology and artistic sensibility of an era.

One of the most striking elements that shape the Islands’ architectural identity are the mansions set in spacious courtyards opening onto sea views. These structures have acted like both functional and symbolic showcases; they combine the tranquility of the land they sit on with the movement of the world beyond. Especially in the mansions built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the imprint of Westernization on architecture — ornamental segmented arches, European‑style mansard floors, and the harmony of Ottoman motifs — stands out.

One of the most delicate exemplars of this aesthetic richness is a historic pavilion that, perched high on the island, looks out over the sea, with a pool‑filled courtyard and surrounding trees forming a cohesive whole. The building’s stonework, wooden details and original flooring, preserved through restoration, invite the visitor to a day of the past. Standing here you sense that a piece of Istanbul’s multicultural past is still breathing.

When you continue your walk toward the island’s other historic houses, mosques and churches, you notice a different story and a different architectural language at every corner. This richness transforms the Islands from merely a summer getaway into an open‑air museum for those who wish to feel Istanbul’s historical depth.
