An August Sunday from Fener to Haliç: A Walk Scented with Sea Breeze and History

One of the most refreshing places in Istanbul during the August heat is undoubtedly the Haliç shores. Waking up early on a Sunday morning and heading towards Fener Pier, the blue breeze coming from the Bosphorus both cools your face and distances the city's noise. This spot where fishing boats sway and birds fly cheerfully above you is Istanbul's most sincere face through both local and visitor eyes.

As you proceed from the pier towards the coastal promenade, Fener's colorful wooden houses flank your left while Haliç's shimmering water accompanies your right. Unlike the historic peninsula, this walking route offers a calmer, more 'life-filled' neighborhood of the city. Along the way, you can pause at the quaint tea gardens you encounter, watching the sea view with strong tea and simit.

A bit further along the route, the remnants and towers of the Haliç Walls appear before you in silhouette. While these walls were once the city's protective shell, today they serve as shade and viewpoint for walkers. Standing near the 56th Tower and watching where the Bosphorus meets Haliç feels like feeling the pulse of Istanbul's geographic heart. The lights dancing on the water surface at dusk offer priceless frames for those wanting to take photographs.

Towards the end of this coastal strip, it's possible to rest under the shade of a historic plane tree and breathe in the tranquility on this side of the city. This short but intense route stretching from Fener to Haliç is one of the most valuable gifts of the summer months to feel the organic bond Istanbul has established with the sea.
