From Kadıköy to Sarıyer: Child-friendly Istanbul's Coastal and Hill Routes
These are the moments when Istanbul's summer, the coastal towns, and historic pavilions peacefully converge. Starting in Kadıköy and extending northward along the Bosphorus, the route offers a perfect balance for both children to burn off energy and adults to catch their breath. If you set out early in the morning, you can enjoy a pleasant day away from the heat and the crowds.
The first stop of your route could be the Kadıköy waterfront; here, while children play in the open areas around the Fenerbahçe Lighthouse, you can enjoy your coffee watching the blue of the Marmara Sea. The lighthouse’s historic texture and sea view provide an ideal backdrop for both photography and a short break. Thanks to the coastal walking trails and bike paths, getting around without a car is also very easy.
Then you can take a ferry or the metro across the Bosphorus to the European side and head towards Sarıyer. Here, the historic Atlı Köşk, seemingly hidden beneath massive pine trees, catches attention with its expansive gardens where children can explore. The walking paths around the pavilion, the forest air and the Bosphorus view combine to create a tranquility away from the city’s noise, offering wonderful shots for family photographs.
Towards the end of the day, you can take a well-deserved break at one of Sarıyer’s famous bakeries and finish the route by sipping tea at a seaside café in the evening. This itinerary allows you to experience both sides of Istanbul, its historic heritage and natural beauties in a single day, at a child-friendly and enjoyable pace.
