Mid-Summer Istanbul: A Cool Escape in the Historic Peninsula

Istanbul's summer, cloaking the historic peninsula in golden light, the streets become open-air museums. Monday, July 20, strolling at your own pace through the city's most rooted neighborhoods before the week's fatigue sets in offers a breath pause for both mind and body. A walk that begins in the spacious basin of Sultanahmet Square drifts among stones that whisper the stories of thousands of years.

The first stop of your walk could be the Basilica Cistern, which offers refuge from the captivating coolness of the underground. The sound of water dripping among the Medusa-headed columns is enough to make you forget the July heat above. From here, stepping out and getting lost in the labyrinthine streets of the Kapalıçarşına'n, stepping into a world where colorful glass threads and spice aromas dance. As you head towards the Egyptian Çarşına, the golden shores and the white trails drawn by the ferries complete the Boğaz view.

When mastering the midday, witnessing the city's widest view means paying tribute to the genius of Mimar Sinan'ın. Resting with tea brewed in one of the tea gardens while the call to prayer sounds creates a moment where time stands still. If you wish to get lost among Balat'ın colorful houses, reaching the innocent and sincere texture of Haliç'in via the waterfront is also an option.

Evening light, Topkapı Saray'ının harem courtyards and tulip gardens bathed in a golden hue, walking along the palace walls is like a farewell salute to Istanbul'un sultanic past. Ending the day in front of Sirkeci Gar'ının historic façade, with the lingering steam dreams of the still audible Orient Express'in, is the perfect finale to feel the city's cosmopolitan spirit.
